The European Network of Mining Regions will hold its third European Workshop – Mining and Environment - 1-3 June 2006 in Patras, Greece. This workshop is open to ENMR partner organizations and registered ENMR associate members and other invited guests.
Programme Summary
The theme for this workshop is “Mining and Environment” and will focus on each stage of mining with respect to environmental issues. During the ENMR Mining and Environment workshop we will touch on the following topics:

Field Trip to S&B bauxite mines and to the Vagonetto – Fokis Mining Park
Vagonetto – Fokis Mining Park, is a new and unique Theme Park offering to each guest, the opportunity to experience firsthand, step-by-step, techniques of bauxite mining. The inspiration of opening such a park originally came from the people who worked at the mine in the past, with a strong will to preserve and depict to others their memories and recollections of their work.
Objectives of the workshop
The objective of the European Workshop on Mining and Environment is to share mining and environment knowledge and experience among EU actors:
- Presentation of examples of the best practices from ENMR partner regions
- Review of methods, tools and indicators for measuring environmental impact during each stage of mining
- Presentation of ideas for solving mining and environment problems
- Discussion of the most problematic Mining and Environment issues in moderated panels with representatives from the European Commission, National Ministries, Industry, and ENMR partner organizations
Expected results from the workshop
- Strengthen dialog between ministries of the environment and ministries of industry in ENMR partner region states
- Improved decision making in the field of mining licencing and environmental protection
- Improved co-operation between the mining industry and research & scientific institutionsthrough improved transfer of knowledge
- Provide mine operators and environmental management actors with methods, tools, best practices and recommendations
- Contributions to the ENMR’s European Roadmap for Mining Regions due at the end of 2006
